Major Canal Reinforcement at Nyangombe

After decades of service, the canal that channels the water to the hydro electric plant was in need of maintenance. All hands on deck were required for this massive work effort to divert the water, drain the canal, pressure wash the walls, provide concrete reinforcement and then to resurface the walls.

The hydro electric plant at Nyangombe is fed by a canal that diverts water from the Nyangombe River. The 60 foot drop from the Nyangombe waterfall provides enough power to run the generator, providing the needed electricity for the training center.

While the electricity was off, outdoor kitchens were utilized. A small charcoal stove called a babula was the appliance of choice to provide hot meals each day. Candles and lanterns provided light at night. There were no Wi-Fi assisted phone calls.

Routine maintenance was also performed on the turbine during the canal work. Electricity is certainly a blessing that we take for granted!
